nice translation but wilson still wins out for me, the iambic pentameter is just too nice and i was not a fan of the frequent super long run on sentences in this one. also a touch misogynistic at times which made me go 🤨

I enjoyed it more than The Illiad. But if I have to hear about 'dawn's rosy fingers' one more time I'll strike Odysseus down myself.

I've read the modern Stephen Fry books about greek mythology, including his modern retelling of The Odyssey, so I knew the general story going in which I think helped with my understanding of this version.

Odysseus' adventures, and Telemachus' journey discovering what happend to the other great soldiers from Troy were engaging and fascinating. They feast a lot and eat a lot of meat and drink wine, they can't be getting their daily fibre intake which worries me.

The last few chapters once Odysseus arrived on Ithaca were very slow paced and repetitive. Like, I get it, the suitors are assholes and Penelope cries a lot. I didn't really need 6 chapters to repeatedly tell me this. The way the suitors and betraying servants got their comeuppance was quite grusome, I wonder if that'll be shown in the Christopher Nolan film!
