I really like Greek Mythology so I enjoyed the book however since it was written in poetry form it was not always the easiest to understand.

Much better than the Iliad, although suffers from a lot of the same drawbacks

The narrative structure actually felt fresh and interesting to begin with. Rather than just starting from Odysseus leaving Troy, I really liked that they gave us Telemachus' view to generate some suspense. Then having Odysseus tell the first half of his Odyssey, then experience the second half also helped the story avoid just being a "this happened, then this happened, etc". It was good story telling.

Until we got back to Ithaca. It's probably because I don't understand what it was like to be Greek at that time and how they viewed honour and revenge, but I really didn't see any point to the subterfuge of Odysseus pretending not to be himself. It felt like a waste, and the "scheme" (very generous use of the word scheme here) to get back at the suitors was so unimaginative and dull. Literally just get them in a room and kill them, you didn't expose anything new about them with all your talking and shooting arrows through axes.

Great story let down by a boring ending.
