I believe wholeheartedly that, were this story to be erased from history, not only literature, but the very soul of this sea so dear to me would've suffered as a result. A classic beyond classics, a journey beyond journeys.

Short review of three points;
1) Odysseus is a sociopath and would absolutely shoot a man in Reno just to watch him die.
2) The sad bit with the dog breaks me every time in every translation
3) Penguin Clothbound Classics often do not wear well under heavy use, the foil design has a habit of separating.

This was a strange read. Parts of it I totally loved and couldn’t get enough, but others I found myself just skimming.
I needed to read this and I think everyone should at some point. I only read it so I could see if Nolan stuck to the source material when the film comes out.
It’s very obviously a book written thousands of years ago but it reads like a primary school kid trying to describe everything all at once. But it was enjoyable non the less.

Between the Iliad and the Odyssey, I'm shocked that I enjoyed the former more. That's not to say it wasn't an enjoyable read overall - it just didn't resonate with me as much.
There's a lot to love in this epic: with its familiar Homeric prose, all the mythological aspects and high stakes, it's clear to see why it's a classic. There's something gripping about a man who just wants to return home to his family against all odds. My view on this tale is definitely coloured by the musical adaption by Jorge Rivera-Herrans which is phenomenal.
Athena was a personal favourite while reading this. The bright-eyed goddess of war was always at the right place at the right time, always stoking the flames exactly the way she wanted. Her dynamic with both the Olympian gods and with the mortals was always entertaining to read. A second favourite was Penelope who, despite being somewhat of a secondary character, weaved her own clever plots and maintained as much of her family's dignity as she could while vultures circled overhead.
My one gripe with the story was Telemachus. I was assured that he would grow into his manhood and would learn how to be a leader of both his household and the kingdom; and while I waited for him to do so, the narrative concluded. From scolding his mother in order to reaffirm his masculinity to being unable to fend off intruders in his household as a man fully grown, I found little to endear me to boy trapped in his father's shadow - a prison of his own making.
All in all, I enjoyed reading this less than I expected but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
