A bit sensational and verging on romance-novel-level relationship development; nonetheless spooky AF (did not read while home alone) and enjoyable mystery.

S.J. Bolton's Lacey Flint books may be my new favorite series.

Glad I stuck with this series; this is an excellent psychological thriller. Less "out there" than a typical Sophie Hannah, but similar in vibe and spookiness. Excellent.

I really like this author's writing style, but.... The ending feels unfinished. What happened to the bad guys?

Veelbelovende spannende start maar gaandeweg verliest het boek zijn spanning. Te weinig onverwachte wendingen om de spanning er in te houden. Voorspelbaar einde.

As I was reading this, I kept thinking "This is so creepy and interesting. I can't wait to find out how the 'bad guy(s)' are pulling this off!" Sadly, I never found out because the book ends abruptly and the explanations we're given don't explain everything. We don't even find out if anyone is caught, the entirety of how the crimes were pulled off, or the full motivation for the crimes. The ending was so unsatisfying!

I really liked this & I found it to be a gripping read. Admittedly, it did take a bit for me to get into at the start, mainly because there were no indicators when there was a POV change - one paragraph would be Lacey’s POV & the next would be someone else’s. However, I was soon hooked and didn’t want to put it down.
I like Lacey as a character - she’s tenacious, smart and is not easily rattled, but she is also a bit of a mess. Seeing these aspects of her personality made for good reading, with the competent police officer having to be hidden by the struggling student persona. However, Lacey is who she is, and she soon becomes too involved in the investigation. Much like Lacey, we don’t know who to trust and there are plenty of red herrings all round.
I did feel that the ending was underwhelming and it just seemed like there could have been another chapters so that it didn’t feel like the book ended halfway through an emotionally charged moment.
