I wish we got to see more of the development of the boys’ feelings and relationship over time. I also felt like it would’ve been fine ending much earlier than it did. Our Ever After was lovely to read, and Tane-kun is such a sweet and funny addition to the love story.
As in a lot of queer manga, the characters need to work on consent.

What a great start to 2023 and it’s set around the end of December/January (unbeknownst to me) so Yhh a great time.

Non-Trigger Warning: this book contains more fluff then a teddy factory, more sweetness then all the maple syrup in North America and such extreme cuteness. So beware… but also don’t. Go on and treat yourself to a beautiful, lovely read with Our Dining Table.

We follow the main character Yutaka, a salaryman, who gets anxious eating around people despite being culinarily talented. Whilst at lunch in a park, an adorable little boy Tane comes up and eats half his onigiri. Embarrassed by his brother’s actions, Minoru apologies and they leave. However, the following day the brothers are waiting for Yutaka so Tane can apologise and gives him a lolly and they ask if he’d like to come to theirs to cook. What follows is the tale of three wonderful, extremely loveable characters growing together. They cook, share meals, talk, go on outings and most importantly go over things in their past that forced them to not be happy and by sharing these learn to experience happiness and feel free again. There is also a budding BL romance (nothing sexual) that is so adorable.

The writing is not the best but it is a manga and so the reading/viewing experience does place importance on this as well as the art. And the art is beautiful, the characters and scenes are drawn so well, there’s so much emotion in the faces and just wow it really brings the story to life. And it’s just adorable!!!! The characters are just the definition of lovable - Yutaka, Minoru, Tana and their dad are the main characters in this and all amazing, literally ‘cinnamon roll’ energy at its peak.

There are mentions of some pressing issues like the death of a parent, grief, bullying, anxiety and eating disorders but they are handled exceptionally well. I don’t think I’d want anything to change in all honesty, only for it to have been longerz

I would 100% totally recommend this book, it’s just so so good and sweet - be careful for cavities btw. It’s a single volume manga so no need to be committed, it’s short, well paced and did I say adorable yet because it is just awghhhhh. I cannot with this anymore.

P.S. If you don’t smile at reading this, do you need a hug?

I’m trying out writing notes as I read books to help with my reviews which is below. It’s spoiler filled so DON’T READ if you care about parts being spoiled:

Yutaka, salaryman who gets anxious eating around people. In park and meet Tane who eats his onigiri so brother minoru apologies. Then they come back and ask y how to make onigiri so he does and plan to meet again.
When shopping for ingredients, y sees his brother (family not close, he’s adopted), t feels ill so go home and m says y’s brother was a looker but ‘not my type, though’ (screaming in gay), eat and chat together (he’s getting better - so cute) m wants to learn to cook for t so he’s healthy

Y lends t scarf, next day m finds y in shop gives scarf back and eat together in park “I’m so happy. So stupidly, totally happy.”

Gets invited for Christmas but y has a fever, thinking back to past and siblings bullying him/making him feel left out, m arrives makes udon and cares for him, he wants to know everything about y but feel asleep. His dad was saying how m seems happier and that he must like y as got close quickly.

Y Comes over, their dad encourages t to leave them alone to talk where y tells m hos sort about losing his parents at 4, grandparents at 8, moving with rich relatives that were kind but older brother didn’t accept him and bullied him esp during meals so decided to start eating alone and even after leaving and meeting people still afraid to share a meal until meeting them. So thanked him.
Then on nye when y and m meet, m says it’s he who should be thanking for y for reaching out and kisses him. On nye. In the snow. Awgh so cute.

When m’s mum died, he moved from having anxiety about her leaving him to a hole that could never be filled. Having coffee and m Told y that 2 years ago when m and t argued as was getting on m’s nerves and didn’t want to pick him up so lied on the floor and cried, y encouraged t to get up and said he’s a good boy. Adorable. He admits to liking then loving him. He’s started to feel alive and calm spending time with y. But then shake hands saying wants things to stay the way they are. Nooooo

New year countdown and y contemplating what m said, thinking that being touched and kissed by him was fine so runs to their house. They go to park to chat and y’s trying to tell him he loves him too ‘but those words… They aren’t enough to capture how I truly feel. You are so important to me. I want… To be with you always, Minoru. Forever.’ They cuddle ‘it’s like… learning a new way… to use my heart.’

Visit their mum’s shrine, m feeling so darn happy, y cheerier at work and went drinking with colleagues. All have dad’s special kimchi tomato hot pot and getting on very well but y gets drunk so m suggests he stays over. Y having second thoughts on relationship incase it’ll end in pain and how if he leaves now the wound won’t be too deep, doesn’t think he could handle loosing m, t and their dad like his own parents, scared as not alone anymore. Has heart to heart with dad about how the pain he felt loosing wife was proof he loved her and he’s so glade y met them and together they can take on the pain of loss.

Y takes t to m’s workplace and they have ramen together. He says he want to be, eat and live together… always.

Our ever after: all older and living together Awgh so cute like wow.

Besides how adorable this manga is, I really liked the mangaka's way of presenting each person's relationship with food & grief :
Yutaka - Bullied for the way he looks while eating, and was pushed into a corner of miserably eating alone to the point where his food was tasteless.
Minoru - Craved his deceased mom's cooking, and feels no joy eating food while trying to do his best for his younger brother.
Tane - Just a cute baby enjoying food.

Throughout the story, there were several heartwarming scenes of the new family eating together, and I loved that there was absolutely no shaming in how each one of them enjoyed it, and they simply wanted to have it together as a family

ok, now I should stop reading at 4 am

Our Dining Table is honestly the sweetest thing I have ever read!! I was almost in tears from how soft and warm it was. And right now, I just want to start reading it all over again! 🥺🥰

I think the thing I loved the most was that it focused on how food can bring people together. And the love that can bloom from a simple act of kindness. I also really liked the anxiety rep in this. Both Yutaka and Minoru are so relatable in that respect. I’m giving this a full five stars. If you’re looking for something soft and sweet and heartwarming to read, give this manga a try. You won’t be disappointed!

I really loved this manga. It was so sweet and all the characters were so lovable. The storyline was incredibly easy to follow and I felt satisfied with the way it ended. I really enjoy reading fast-paced things like this to break up heavy reading. This really helped refresh my brain and I really recommend this story!
