A magical, if dark, fairytale for cold winters. This story reads smoothly and so that you’re eager to know what happens next (save for a few moments that felt slow). What I loved most was the depth of character you find in Vasya, her brothers, and her father. Her father especially, is a man full of moral grey yet I felt much for him. Vasya’s story is that of breaking free of expectations and finding herself. She’s a very strong character, and while I find some stories of female freedom tedious and full of cliches, Vasya’s develops beautifully. I’m proud of her and I enjoyed the way her story wrapped up with the characters of fairytales.

I had this book in my tbr for nearly 3 years now. I wish I had read it sooner. it was so incredibly magical. the writing was amazing and the worldbuilding phenomenal. I loved how soft yet harsh the novel was. how the story started slowly, with a story of its own. how myths and fairytales are real. it laid the groundwork for something bigger to come, which I am very excited to read soon!

this story reads like the folk tales that arden weaves throughout, all magic and mystery and power and sacrifice. it was a quick, enjoyable read with a strong cast of characters.
“The quiet, crystalline words dropped into Vasya’s mind and she saw the heavens making wheels of fire, in shapes she did not know, and a snowy plain that kissed a bitter horizon, blue in black.”
