This is a slow burn but in the best way. Mythical and magical and itching to be read. Beautifully written and layered with depth and seeped in magic. ❄️

The storytelling in this book? Absolutely out of this world.

I have conflicting feelings about this one. I love the atmosphere and setting as well as the writing, those were accomplished flawlessly. I felt like I was in a cold Russian winter. However the characters, plot structure and pacing fell flat for me. The third act was too short, the relationships not fleshed out well enough and there were too many characters introduced that weren't fully developed or were in the end superfluous to the plot.

This book had me captivated heart and soul. Definitely going to be one of those books that sticks with me for a very long time.

4.5 stars from this reader. I loved it. First 1/3 of book did read a little less exciting, but gave a solid foundation to the story and was necessary. Also, very gritty and a reminder of why I would not have wanted to live during that time period. Yowza. But ugly historical truths aside, what a gorgeously written, rich and heavy fantasy. I loved it.

A suitable and engaging read for young adults. The characters are rather flat and archetypal in my opinion for older adults. Some nuances of the story hinted at an interesting depth to certain characters but ultimately did not feel fleshed out.
