Easy to read. Insightful to the challenges that undocumented immigrants and divided families fight to overcome.

I don’t like to rate memoirs bc it feels like I’m rating someone’s life experience and I’m not about that

Gutierrez’s perspective is one that I’m familiar with but have not fully explored, so I’m grateful that she has shared her story for people like me to dive into. It has all of the substance for me to empathize with but not enough style for my preferences, so the read was a bit dry for me. Still, from one eldest immigrant daughter to the next, I’m glad that I read this and hope that others do too.

Why is it that people who have had their land stolen are forced to befriend the thieves who took it from them? Why is it that people whose families were killed must befriend the murderers in an attempt to continue to live?
