Hmm. I did not like this one quite so much. A filler volume in some ways, like Fables and Reflections, but one which I just didn't find as engaging. Cluracan is perhaps my favourite character in it; he may be a fairy, but he's definitely an Irish fairy. Gaiman's obviously either spent quite a bit of time in Ireland, or he's studied the speech patterns of someone Irish a bit, but despite the occasional twee, I think he captured us pretty well (I know a couple of real life versions of Cluracan, yes I do). And his story provided a nice little parallel with a couple of issues regarding Church/State relations that have occurred over the centuries *g*.

Damnit, Neil Gaiman. You master. You maddening literary genius. This series is just a masterpiece of storytelling. Everything so very perfect. These are just short stories but the way they tie together - there’s just nothing else like it.

Damn.

A man and a woman are traveling by car; he's driving, she's sleeping. A snow storm comes out of the blue, and they crash. She's injured, so he picks her up and walks back towards the road, except he can't find it. Instead, they end up at a strange, ever-shifting inn, where they find shelter.

There are many other travelers there, and the two settle at a table with people from other worlds, and they get to telling tales. Sometimes, the tales are stories they've heard from others.

The stories are haunting: cities sleeping and dreaming, a city of the dead, a sea serpent nobody would believe, politics and lies, and the odd tale of Prez and Boss Smiley that's eerily just around the corner of something oddly familar. And within them there are other stories.

Enchanting, well-written, and capturing the feeling of telling tales to others rather well.

Kanskje min favoritt så langt, og definitivt det best illustrerte volumet hittil.
