Another great Sandman collection essentially about storytelling. Nice twist of intrigue at the end too.
I enjoyed some of these stories but the one about the Prez just left me bored.
9/10
Just reread this series for the first time in many years and it does not disappoint. It's truly the most stunning, imaginative, and enjoyable graphic novel I've ever read.

This series just gets better and better the more I read. I wouldn't mind owning these books at all.
This was a good, solid set of stories, nicely and cohesively framed in a Chaucer-style coming together of diverse people from disparate worlds into a weird little tavern. Unlike previous collections of shorter stories, this one was 100% enjoyable, and I was invested in most of the characters by the end.
Speaking of the end - what a hook!
Gaiman dipped his toes into some of his classic wankery ("words... I meant worlds" springs to mind), but you know what? It wasn't too irritating this time. Mostly it just felt like a refrain on the theme he has set up, trying to keep the whole thing feeling cohesive. Feels more like a gimmick to me at this point, but what can you do? The man's got a fixation. Writing is all about hammering out fixations.

Nested stories within stories. This is certainly Gaiman, but not all the layers work for me equally. It's not one of my favorite volumes, but it ends well, and certainly makes sense for its placement within the larger structure of the series. The calm before the storm becomes a calm in the storm this time.
Sorry for the somewhat cryptic description. The avoidance of plot spoilers makes this volume hard to talk about, as it sets up and introduces Sandman's final act.

Where Vol. 7 was a story on The Endless themselves, this volume goes back to featuring them sporadically. It centers around a Reality Storm that strands folks from all realms (humans, faeries, centaurs) at in Inn called World's End. In the grand tradition of Canterbury Tales, the story is a story about stories. Sometimes there's a story within the story that is being told.
The stories include:
A city dreaming.
A faerie sent by Queen Mad to ensure a unification of cities doesn't happen.
A town made up of, essentially, undertakers.
Really good stuff here. I didn't catch nearly all the allusions. Gaiman is a well read fellow.

Back to another anthology of this series. We find a pair of people accidentally enter a mysterious inn that has people from different world, eras, and dimensions all together and spend time sharing stories from their world's. Members of the Endless only show up in just a few and even Hob Gadling comes back for a story. It's just alright. I didn't really feel it until the last few pages where it got real for a minute. We're getting close to the end of the series with only two books left and they're going to be rough for me, given what the subject matter is, so I'll probably hold off on them for now.
