Incredibly funny and entertaining. I think it does a great job of mixing really absurd character choices with very real worst-person-you’ve ever met characteristic. I’ve never known someone obsessed with a children’s book like this, but I’ve definitely met narcissistic egomaniacs who truly have no regard for others and cause absolute chaos in their wake. Very fun read!

I went in trying to find the dark humor the book jacket claims, but only felt like every page was just utterly and consistently unpleasant to read. I actually feel a sense of dread that I might have to revisit any of it when we discuss at bookclub.

The MC is insufferable. And just when I think her only possible action is to apologize, she does the complete opposite. And through enabling, she is able to “live” her life as this unapologetic selfish woman.
I appreciated the intervention scene since all her mistreatment of others finally came to a head. And while she does end up returning the book, it’s clear she is not sorry for stabbing her sister.
I want to let this book sit with me for a while longer but right now my rating is 3.5 stars.

This is one of those "what the heck did I just read" books, but in a very understated way.

My main takeaway from this one was confusion. Throughout the book, I could not decipher whether I was being laughed at or laughed with. The plot was far more interesting than I expected it to be, but it also veered pretty far from the synopsis – Treasure Island and the narrator's "core values" drop out of the book around midway and don't make a return until the conclusion.

Despite the low rating, I did have a good time with this one. I'm just not sure I took anything away from it.

It started out as boring. Unfortunately, I powered through. It slowly became more and more disturbing. Then it fizzled out with an anti-climatic ending. Overall, depressing. Trigger warning for animal abuse.

This book was not what I expected. I should have known from the exclamation points.

It's nothing like the broad-horizoned, adventure-filled escapade I imagined. It's almost sarcastic. Out protagonist is filled with adventure-chasing ambitions upon reading Treasure Island, yes, but not in the way expected - her choices are more self-sabotaging than world-opening, and her attitude doesn't help. She's hard to like, if you read this too earnestly, so you have to take it for what it is: an ironic look at what it can be to be BOLD and INDEPENDENT and HORN-BLOWING (I'm forgetting one). Be careful how you set yourself free... you might actually be locking yourself in. (It's hard to be independent in our society; if you don't have a job, you end up relying on your boyfriend or your parents.)

High points are the parrot and the ending, which somehow I did not see coming.
(okay, so I'm not surprised I didn't see the stabbing part coming, but the intervention seemed obvious, once I realized that's what was going on.)
The voice and writing throughout is great, pitch perfect for the story that's being told. And it's pleasantly short.
