I remember finishing the first book in this series, hiding my Kindle on the side of my desk during junior year AP Psychology, then just sitting in a trance when I was finished, completely ignoring whatever my teacher was talking about. This series has been one of the few to give me such an intense rush of adrenaline with each book, such a sense of, "Oh my goodness, if I don't find out what happens next, I don't know what I'll do." I've grown very attached to these characters, and so going into this book, I wasn't quite prepared to let them go. However, this final book lived up to all my expectations. While I wasn't in such an intense shock-fueled trance after finishing it, this book definitely had many moments where I was on the edge of my seat, moments where I had to put it down and take a moment to breathe in order to get my bearings once more.
This book also left me immensely satisfied. While I'm not happy, per se, about the endings for some characters, I'm satisfied. This book feels right to me, the right conclusion to a wonderful and intense and magical series.

3.5? I guess?
Clearly, I have mixed feelings about this book. While I enjoyed reading the climax, I’m still unsure about the rest of it. As the finale to the quartet, though, I suppose I was disappointed.

You know what? It was a good ending for a series and sometimes that can be hard to find.
Five Dark Fates was one of my most anticipated reads of the year, and it did not disappoint!
The characters are so addicting that throughout this entire series my choice for favorite queen flip-flopped between all three. This final installment went almost exactly as I was hoping/expecting, so that was super exciting! Without giving away spoilers, I will say Katherine’s ending was a surprise to me and Jules’ ending was another I was not expecting, and I found her much more tolerable in this final book. And Pietyr. I don’t even have proper words for Pietyr’s character. He is so complex and unpredictable and he threw me for a little loop there towards the end.
I have few complaints for this book. The beginning was a little slow. It seemed about 30 pages in that big things were about to happen, but I found myself waiting for a while. I also was a little let down by the final battle, only because I thought it lacked strategy and didn’t have enough action.
Overall, this book satisfied my high standards and cemented my love for this series. I was pleasantly surprised it wrapped up as well as it did!

It’s always so sad to see a series you’ve loved from the start, come to end. Even if the ending was a great one, like this one was, I still can’t help but feel a little bit sad that we won’t be getting anymore of these books. I do have one more book to read, a prequel, but other than that, this series is finished for me. I think, down the road, I’ll write a series review of this series. In this review, I’ll briefly touch on the ending of this series but for the most part, this review will be mostly about this book and my thoughts about it.
This wouldn’t be a review about the Three Dark Crowns series if I didn’t mention my love for Katharine. She is still my absolute favorite queen. I still think she is the best queen out of all of them. Her growth in this book was amazing and I truly thought she embodied what it meant to be a queen. And I think deep down, she just wanted to be loved. That’s all anybody can ask for me in life, to be honest.
The other queens, Mirabella and Arsinoe, were okay. I liked them but they aren’t my favorite. Arinsoe still had a pretty abrasive personality that didn’t get any better throughout the whole book. I don’t much care for abrasive personality types. It gets frustrating to read. Mirabella was okay, as well. She didn't have a lot of page time, which honestly didn’t bother me too much. I wanted more of Katharine.
The reason why I rated this book 3.5 stars is because this book was so slow. The series itself is a pretty slow series. There is a lot of political intrigue and planning throughout the whole series but especially in this one. There were a lot of pages of feelings and planning. There weren't a lot of things actually happening. The major events happened far and few inbetween. It really made me not want to read this book.
Overall, this was a good book. I did enjoy myself, for the most part, while reading this book. I still very much adored my Katharine. I thought she was the best part of this whole book and the series as a whole. The end of this book left a lot of room to have a potentially brand new series, which I hope happens. Overall, I’m glad I finished this book and I’m glad I finished this series.
So I just realized I didn't type out my trigger warnings. Sigh. So just look at the other books for trigger warnings as I'm pretty sure they remain the same. There is a lot more death and gore in this book however.

“Mirabella to face down the mist. Katharine to be the vessel. And Arsinoe to banish them with low magic”
I will never get over this book ...
*sigh*at least Pietyr lives.
