Obviously Joan Didion is a skilled writer, but I felt that this was a bleak book that verged on boring. There was not enough variety in Maria’s actions or thoughts to say much of anything that I found interesting or unique about her situation or problems. Addicting  and short book but would have worked better for me as a short story.

if i were to actually describe it i would sound so pretentious but think of like 1970s Hollywood and a mentally ill woman surrounded by horrible people and you've basically got it. really liked.

I really expected more from this book given how popular it seems to be. It has an interesting core concept but I found a lot of the references kind of felt dated. The way she describes queer people is particularly hard to read. I know times have changed and you obviously have to cut any older book a bit of slack when it comes to this stuff but in this book it’s quite present so it’s definitely something to be aware of before reading.

to be frank, this book was depressing. i appreciated delving into the psychology of the main character, maria, but all in all it is a book about a very sad woman in hollywood with a sick child.
