Fool Me Once

I was lucky enough to get an arc copy of this through Net Galley, and I absolutely loved it! It’s crazy how she can write one of my favorite thrillers of all time (In My Dreams I Hold A Knife), and an amazing romance novel as well!

Lee Stone and Ben Laderman are now allies in their fight for a clean energy bill. The pair have a history, and it has been five years since they broke up and they haven't spoken since. Not only are they working against each other, but they are on the same path. The fact that old feelings are refusing to stay buried begins to complicate things.

For one thing, Ben is seeing someone. More than that, their relationship ended up under very bad circumstances and this definitely would complicate anything new happening between them.

As Lee and Ben work towards their common goal, Lee has to deal with old feelings that have proved problematic for her. This made this romance even better, as readers got to see her growth. This book also had a political edge to it as the pair fought to get their bill going. That was a nice twist in this enjoyable romance story.

Many thanks to Graydon House and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

DNF

Wow was the writing cheesy. The opening scene was clearly written with movie rights in the author’s eyes. It would be a movie that I would not watch. Did not improve from there. Left after 19% read.

DID NOT FINISH

I really just was not feeling this one at all

3.5 stars. Better than I expected.

Ashley winstead can do no wrong in my eyes. Both in my Dreams I hold a knife and Fool Me Once were both some of the quickest five star reads of my life! She is now an automatic buy author for me! How she was able to go from an insane thriller to a cute and funny enemies to love romance book just shows her skill!

This book follows Lee Stoner who is director of communications at Lise Motors which is a women lead electric car company. They are attempting to push a bill for all of the state vehicles in Texas to be turned into electric cars. Through this, Lee is forced to work with her college boyfriend who things didn’t end well with and they haven’t spoken since!

Lee stoner is such a relatable character who has had a rough life in terms of love and has been burned a few too many times! When here heartbreak from 5 years ago comes back into her life in expectantly and they are forced to work together her life is thrown for quite a loop! I absolutely loved the back and forth with these characters- such a quick and fun read!

When I was reading this ARC in a coffee shop I looked up and saw this quote on the wall, and it honestly felt perfect. This quote embodies so much of who Lee is as a person and why she does the things she does! Overall, my favorite things about this book were the fact that it was far more than the romance between the two main characters, there is so much depth in each of the events that happen and with Lees relationships with everyone in her life. You truly cannot help but fly through this book!

This book hits shelves April 5th, so add this to your tbr now!

Thank you so much @graydonhousebooks and @ashleywinsteadbooks for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!

I'm unsure about how to feel about this properly.

I enjoyed the first half, but the second half fell flat. It started so strong, but somewhere in the middle of it is where it changed. I wished it was a bit more slow-burn.

I didn't mind the cheating aspect of this book because I like how it deals with morally grey areas of human behavior. However, I did think that Stoner should get some therapy because it was quite clear why she cheated on Ben in the first place.

I didn't 100% love the political background, but I didn't mind it, either.

I guess I'll give this a very soft 4 stars, but it could also be a 3.75, too.

I really loved how messy this was. But it was also kind of overly political which I didn’t really enjoy.

Second chance romances are always a hard sell for me but I feel like this one did the relationship well. There is a lot of discussion in this book around cheating so if that is a hard topic for you, this isn’t the book for you.
