Made me cry. Beautifully crafted, comforting and uncomfortable at the same time. I also just love how distinctly Canadian it is.

This book was okay. I think what the author wanted us to realize at the end of the book was as jaw dropping and mind blasting as I think she hoped. I was consistently confused about multiple parts of the book, which is definitely explained by the ending, but I feel like there may have been better ways to communicate it? I genuinely hated most of the characters, except Jacob and Iver… so it was hard to be engaged with their own problems and perceptions of the crisis when I just really didn’t care about them. Overall, it was a fun read and got a little meta/ mind fucky at times.

4.25 ★★★★☆
"I Think We've Been Here Before" by Suzy Krause was a super intriguing and reflective read that - through the varied perspectives of a family their friends - invites the reader to think deeply about what is truly important in life as the end of the world gets closer.
I think what I loved most about this book was the parallels between the characters' lives in Berlin and Saskatchewan and how everything was strangely linked together. I noticed these details as I was reading but didn't fully understand the how and why until the very end. These parallels, combined with the characters all having a vague sense of déjà vu, lead to a plot that was somewhat confusing, yet nearly had me in tears at the end when everything was explained.
Slow at first, but it read quickly once I got about 40% through.

"How unfair that time only goes one way, that by the time you understand how much you will miss something, it's only because you're already missing it."
"It's not the event that scares him; it's the fact that he can't picture the part after it, and this fear is so vague and enormous that it makes him dizzy. It's like standing on a bridge over the Grand Canyon in the dark, knowing that there is a vast emptiness under you but not being able to see it."
"Time is weird when you're running out of it. It passes in clumps, like clouds of mud falling off the wheel wells of a car- hanging in, then suddenly letting go. One minute seems to last an eternity, then four hours are gone- and it feels like a tragic loss every time, considering how few of them are left in general."

Thank you, Netgally for the ARC and Suzy for writing such a sweet, heartfelt novel. Another review calls this story a nesting doll and that image completely sums up the book for me: with the cat and the necklace and the Deja vu and the murals. At first I was greatly confused by the cat but then it clicked at the end. Such an interesting take on time travel without it being about time travel and a way to make something science-based not too science fictiony.
