Honestly, this didn't live up to my expectations.

I'm 100% a weird books for weird girls kind of reader, and I really hoped this was going to be a super interesting, super twisty kind of book. I wanted it to give much more than it gave, which was ultimately a weak message via an unconventional but not altogether exciting plot line. The characters, even including the main character, were a little underdeveloped. It jumps right into the story with little preamble, which is fine if it makes attempts to either go back and explain more about their backgrounds early on, or if it gives sufficient detail about them throughout, but this book is so caught up in its desire to be weird and quirky that it does neither. The plot twist is more of a plot curve, and the ending is a little underwhelming.

If you're looking for a book that will keep you interested until the end, this might be the one, but only if you like a bit of a letdown by the time that it's all over with.

This book was fantastic!

I started to get worried partway through the book that this was going to be another "happy to lucky guy saves too-serious girl from herself" story. That has become especially frustrating to me since I have learned more about neurodivergence and have an appreciation for those of us who prefer quiet and order. I was super into Ava's half hour "units" and am tempted to institute them in my own life. 🤣.  But anyway, the way this story developed ..OMG it was fantastic. The scene at the office party at the end when Mat is stalking her while he seems to me everyone's best friend and she can't find safety even in a room full of other people - if you have been harassed, you FEEL this scene. I was harassed and stalked at a past job, and this scene made my heart race. But it was more than just triggering; it made me feel seen. Other people have lived that fear and overwhelm. Now we just need to create our own version of Good Guys where we own our own experiences in a nontoxic way. Seeing Ava leave her job was like a celebration of when I left my job.

I just genuinely didn’t like this story. The lack of confrontation to the stalker element was kind of gross and the end result was just really trashy. I found both the main character, Ava, and her boyfriend, Mat, to be really whiney and just annoying. Her best friend wasn’t much better, although at least he held some logic to him. This one was really meh and I honestly wish I would’ve DNF’d it.

This book was FANTASTIC. Truly unique and intriguing, I really struggled to put it down. Although the plot was predictable, it didn’t detract how entertaining the book was. It is filled with witty euphemisms, clever writing, and traps to stumble over as you try to guess what exactly the bigger plot may be. This book is also a great example of what it means to show, rather than tell, a story, especially when it comes to character development.

More like The Very Nice Book! Very much enjoyed.
