This must be her best "little" book. It has all of the Pilcher ingredients with the added intrigue of the always reliable evil twin/good twin did-not-even-know-about-it until the beginning of this book. The love interest was the ultimate Pilcher hero. Strong, good, closed off due to an unhappy relationship, and a little intimidating. He reminded me a lot of Sandy, the Scottish doctor in "Dear Enemy" by Jean Webster. Flora, our heroine, was the usual thin young kind, and good girl, without the irritating weaknesses of the previous young ladies in the prior two books I read. It brought me to tears near the end. Pilcher has a way of getting me connected to her world and really caring about her families.

Unread shelf project 2022: book 24.

I love Pilcher‘s books. They are like a grandma’s hug, a slice of pie, a cup of hot tea, the scent of lavender and vanilla. Just utterly cozy and calm and relaxing, and you know that everything will turn out okay in the end.

This is an earlier, pre-Shell Seekers work but it's better than some that came after (e.g., Coming Home). The story revolves somewhat improbably around two young women (twins) who take each other's place, especially one who stands in to be the fiancee of a well-loved son in a close-knit Scottish family. So, the ultimate setting - multi-generational family in the Scottish highlands - is a familiar one.

A great light-hearted look at family skeletons couple with a love story. A book I like to reread frequently.

3.5 stars. Very good family drama/romance, but perhaps not quite as special as "Winter Solstice" (which is, so far, my favorite of hers).

I really enjoyed this book, and will look for more by Pilcher in the future. I thought the story would revolve around the relationship between Rose and Flora, identical twins seperated at birth. In the end I was glad it did not. Pilcher was able to create strong, human characters whom I developed a variety of opinions about. Even the absent character of Rose became familiar, if not particularly liked by me. I originally thought Antony was selfish asking Flora to participate in his deception. In the end I saw two people who were doing what they thought was best for someone they thought was dieing. If Isobel had not misled them I feel these two people would never do such a thing. (See Pilcher was great, it is as if I actually know these two people!) Lucky for me the story did have a happy and romantic ending, because that is was I was looking for.

This book had the makings of a book that I'd love (twins switching lives, set in Scotland) but it fell short for me. I just could never get invested in the story.
