3.5 - I struggled with this one a bit in parts but overall it’s well written.

I was really invested in this story and the characters in the beginning but I really hated the final third of the book. Great writing, but ultimately a disappointment with the end. 3.5

A complex story of love, family, and what they mean.

Ok wow I didn’t love this book or connect w any of the characters but I still have to give it four stars. It let me glance into a life I don’t know. It took me to Japan and let me tend bar. I didn’t love it but I respect it!

This novel focuses on the two main characters being apart and reflecting on their relationship. Both go through growth and learn more about their families while evaluating whether they are meant to be together.

DID NOT FINISH: 80%

Heavy/difficult read. Did not finish before library loan ended

I really enjoyed this, sort of Sally Rooney-esque in its depiction of a very realistic relationship between to very sad and traumatized people who need to go to therapy. It’s one of the books where all of the main characters are so incredibly frustrating, and you know that if they ever just even just tried to communicate one single thing they were feeling to eachother everything would be so much better so you’re just internally yelling at them the whole time “JUST TELL HIM THAT!” Very little growth happened to anyone in this book and the ending left me pretty unsatisfied, although that was definitely the intention. I love love loved Mitsuko though, she’s a queen!! read this book just for Mitsuko!!

I enjoyed this book and know it's one I'd recommend to people. I think it felt authentic, raw, real. That being said I wasn't obsessed with the characters and sometimes it was a little slow
