Why the author chose not to use quotations or why she chose to structure the book this way… I couldn’t tell you. This book had a few really great scenes but it’s so drawn out.

Who is going to like this book? If you’re mainly into “vibes” rather than plot. If you like character driven stories, but the characters are not dynamic, they simply have new experiences and grow older. People with crazy luck and romantic notions about life. If you’re willing to accept wildly unrealistic things (a child who occasionally speaks like a seasoned art critic and a parrot who can say full blown sentences that match the context of the situation). A love letter to Florence, Italy.

A life changing book, with a cast of characters that enter your heart and never leave. I cried and laughed and I will never forget any of this.

All in all, this was a lovely read. To a certain extent, life affirming. But my cynical self prevailed and snatched a star from my final rating. Perhaps it made me jealous; it made me yearn for la dolce vita.

Once you get used to its writing style, you’ll find the prose gorgeously written. This is an homage to beauty, humanity, and art.

I am very sad to be DNFing this book, but the way it is written and the lack of quotation marks are making it difficult for me to continue. Maybe I will try to pick it up later.
