This was my holiday read and I finished it pretty quickly - although it was a little more dark than I initially expected so not exactly a perfect beach read. This book was one of the better mystery/thriller books I’ve read recently and I found the ending to be pretty good (which definitely boosted my rating as I have been on a run of disappointing endings). Overall it was a quick, easy read and I will certainly continue to pick up more of Lisa Jewell’s work.
NOTE: Please do read the TWs beforehand as the themes in this book were very disturbing.

Second update: Changing to 2 stars. I can't get over how the police never talked to Noelle, who should have been a prime suspect, not just from what we know but because of the evidence with the diary, how pissed Noelle had been about being fired, her sister knowing she was uncomfortable around her, how where Noelle lived was exactly the same street where Ellie was last seen, and that plot hole is just not forgivable.
--------
Update: Slept on it decided to round down. You're telling me these police officers never once talked to Noelle after Ellie disappeared?! You know they had to have talked to Hanna and Theo, and it hadn't even been that long since Noelle had been let go, and she was never once brought up by them?! Hanna certainly knew Ellie didn't like Noelle, and it was written in her diary, which absolutely would have been reviewed by the police. And Laurel had to have scrutinized every relationship and never once thought about how very rude and upset Noelle was about being fired?
So now I'm irritated all around because there's no way that's realistic. And why wouldn't people be able to hear Ellie screaming and banging on the basement window? That place seemed to be a well-walked street and it was never stated that the room was sound proofed.
--------
I read this all in one sitting. God, poor Ellie. I felt my heart breaking for her the entire time and absolutely shed tears. I really hoped that things would play out differently but there wasn't a twist in this book. How you think it's going to play out is exactly what happens. That's ultimately why I'm saying about 3.5 stars rounding up. I thought the writing was wonderful and absolutely kept me engaged, but I wish there had been something else.
Side note: Why did Blue think Poppy was being coached? Why was Poppy on the "weird" side and always wear the same clothing? It seemed like those would be a set up for something with how often it was brought up, but alas, nothing there. I can see how with Floyd's admission about basically getting fashion tips from Paul's pictures could show that he had no idea what fashion even was so how could he dress a little girl? But she gravitated toward all that anyways, so idk there.

A lot of people kept saying that this book was so predictable, but I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what was actually going on. I thought the mystery was very well done. The parts of the book about Noelle and Ellie was my favorite—I was weirded out and my heart grew tight, but it was so good. My only complaint is that the ending felt rushed.
