So good !!!
This review will be quick because I'm catching up on my late reviews, and there are a lot.
I find in this novel what I had loved in "The nine goblins" : found family, magic, hardships, a bit of horror, quest, characters that are not what they usually are in most books (older, plumper, or even possessed chickens). That's what I like with T. Kingfisher so far : so many things are unexpected.
My review will be short but my conclusion will draw a long way : I absolutely need to read everything she has ever written.
Strongly recommended !

A mystical world where a princess turned into a nun must recruit a dust wife, a moth-drawn man, a godmother, and a dog made of bones to assassinate a king.
The group of found family characters are to die for in this story. T. Kingfisher is the queen of writing such thought-out characters in such huge worlds with so few pages. This is a folklore quest story that gave D&D vibes. I mean, they visit a place called Goblin Market. The quest/journey part of this book was not boring or dragged out. I feel some fantasy quest books can be dragged out or filled up with dialogue scenes that could be cut, and that was not the case for this story.
I was not aware that there would but a subplot of romance, but I am glad there was. The relationship between those two was very cute, and I loved seeing them yearn for each other throughout their journey.
This is a great book to read at the beginning of fall to get into the spooky vibes!

This book has a lot of potential for a larger universe. But the author needs to just take things a step further. While reading, I kept thinking, “this is a long walk around for a quick drink of water.”

I didn’t like the style of writing and the historical(ish) setting. It reminded me of another T. Kingfisher book that I didn’t care for.
This is probably a very good book, but for me personally, there’s something about this author’s writing style that’s just too circa-2010-style self-consciously twee and pedantically wholesome. I don’t think there’s anything objectively bad here, but there’s a particular flavor to it that’s like cilantro: the whole time I’m experiencing it, I wish I wasn’t. Anyway if you’re not me you’ll probably enjoy this book.
