This is a fun, light hearted but compelling read. It was like taking  a thoroughly distracting break from the world. The author has an acute eye and wry sense of humor and excellent observational skills.  I’m not a beer drinker and thought that would put me off. It doesn’t matter! I couldn’t put it down.

The author placed the story in accurate socio-political contexts a few times. Whenever he did that, I found myself wanting MORE. His characters’ commentary, for example, on classism was spot on! Yet felt “unfinished.” The resolution worked, but I was hoping for a more declarative lesson learned.

This book was my favorite of the three books I've read by this author.  It’s a heartwarming story told in alternating chapters by Edith and Helen (estranged sisters) and Helen's granddaughter, Diana.  It is a story about family (lost and found), grief, the haves and the have nots, determination, second chances, and legacy.  It is as sweet as Betsy's strawberry ale.  J. Ryan Stradal knows how to create a strong setting, and his writing is like comfort food.  This would be a great choice for readers who love character driven family stories, flawed (but likable) characters, and up-lit/feel good fiction.
