This book is like, the definition of fine? It wasn’t bad, but I also didn’t love it. The premise was interesting and I do generally enjoy YA horror, so I did really like how creepy it was from the onset and the escalation of all of the scary and unnerving things to outright danger.

I listened to the first 60% in audiobook and finished the rest in hardcopy which I definitely preferred, which meant I could skim a bit when the pacing was kind of weird, which it frequently was. The ending was so abrupt that if I hadn’t read reviews saying “what just happened??” I honestly would have thought I was missing a page in my copy.

While Marigold was a very compelling protagonist and I was rooting for her (and her brother Sammy, who I adored!) I felt like the subject matter of the book, such as her struggles with addiction and substance use, did not match how juvenile the narration felt. I’m not sure if that was in part due to the audio narrator that I didn’t love, but some editorial choices just didn’t really match up for me.

All in all, not a bad way to spend a few days in October when you’re in the mood for something creepy, but I wouldn’t say it’s a must-read.

She can’t keep getting away with this.

Extra content warning since storygraphy still doesn’t have a specific tag for this:
insects/insect horror. The main character has a phobia of bedbugs and discusses them in graphic detail very often.

My biggest gripe is the ending. I would have liked to see what happened directly after the events of the last chapter,  when
The Foundation is finally exposed
. Maybe the author left it ambiguous because in real life, those with money, power and privilege usually win.

This was good. I liked the character development from Marigold. I didn't like the ending. It felt like it needed an epilogue at the least. There were also some parts that felt rushed, but overall the pacing wasn't too bad. I was hooked on this story and had to keep reading to find out what was going on and what was going to happen. I just want to know what happened after all the chaos. I need some type of closure.

I could not put this book down! It was so gripping and fast-paced. Jackson did a superb job at crafting a super tense, atmospheric storyline that was rooted in and explored systemic racism. The MC of the story, Mari, was so dynamic and undergoes really meaningful development. I also liked the focus on sibling relationships. I cannot wait to read more of Jackson’s backlog because this has just solidified to me how much I enjoy her writing.

I docked a half star because at first the plot is a little directionless, and the ending could have done with a bit more resolution.
