A Broken Blade

Having read many mediocre romantasy books lately, Broken Blade was relatively good, its world had layers and the MC's story felt deeper (and she's as badass as they come). Although the same clichés (enemies to lovers, one bed, shadow daddy, betrayal, super old dudes, FMC's mysterious background etc.) are repeated here as in all books of this genre (apparently that's the point?), there was something fresh in this one.

Maybe it's the mood I'm in that's throwing me off but this book is boring. The plot isn't all that interesting and the politics are just something I've seen over and over again. I'm okay with fae fantasies but what set this book apart from the rest? Not much. I was more upset though about how I was 70 pages in and the "enemies" kissed on their first encounter (technically second, because this was a rematch) Which didn't even make sense to me, that her enemy who she struggled to track down. All it took was to ask for a rematch through some connections. Okay... Keera isn't a teenager nor is she in her twenties. Both her and The Shadow aren't human, I'm not sure how old she is but she's old enough to not be this cringey. It just didn't seem all that believable.

I also have to mention this, I get this book tackles hard themes. Which I'm okay with but my god. Keera is absolutely depressing to read as an FMC. She's CONSTANTLY drinking and self harming. As I said, I'm aware that this is the point. But it just makes it hard to read when her inner monologuing is her constantly battling between her depression and morals.

Maybe I'll come back to this, not sure.

Not bad but nothing special. It felt like a compilation of a bunch of fantasy tropes and characters, and the lack of anything unique made it a bit boring overall. I also found it overdramatic and trite with the way it approached alcoholism, self-harm, and sexual assault… topics that should be handled with care, not used as shallow plot devices.

It might have benefited from third-person narration because of how plot-driven the writing is; the first-person pov contributed nothing to the story and felt awkward at times.

I’d only recommend it as a comfort read for people looking for specific tropes.

This was really good. I wasn’t expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I absolutely love Riven. He is such a sweetheart when he wants to and he does care so much.

Keera is a very driven person, and her backstory is so sad. I’m so glad she finds a place and her people. I’m excited to find out more about her background.

Idk if I’m the only one, but it seems like I can love a couple together so much, but than as soon as they actually get together, I don’t feel the same chemistry they had. This was that with Keera and Riven. I loved their tension, but then I didn’t love them together and I’m so sad about that.

Highly recommend

I wanted to enjoy this but I kinda didn't. Yet another enemies to lovers that didn't transition well. I wanted more tension and a great release. Interesting world though and I liked the strong female main character. I don't feel compelled to read the second.
