I just love Philippa Gregory’s Tudor and Plantagenet series. This book felt quite unique, as most of the previous books in the series focus on an actual historical figure (typically royalty or of noble lineage), but this focused on Hannah the Fool, a “normal” woman. It was actually a great book to go into after listening to Gregory’s Normal Women book. The characters were brought to life so well, and I really felt Hannah’s confusion, loneliness and loyalty being stretched to its limits. I didn’t care for her romance to Daniel though, and I thought her father was a very weak character. I look forward to the next one!

Quite a gripping book. Not very sure about its historical accuracy after reading some critical comments online. But I think no one can deny that the story telling is good. I am glad that the “fool” does finally manage to find a happy life for herself, away from the back-stabbing, life-threatening court. I might continue reading the other books in the series, even though I have read them before.

Those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.

Those people who don't understand the need for separation of church and state should read about the Mary Tudor reign.

Awesome book. SO awesome.

I loved the character of Hannah that Gregory created to traverse the stormy waters between Queen Mary & Princess Elizabeth and also shed light on the struggles of invisible Jews in the battle between Catholics & Protestants. And if these were not enough controversies to tackle, Gregory tosses in the issue of a young women ("in breeches") trying to make a way for herself in a male-dominated society.

Truly fascinating & captivating. One of those books I wanted to finish, but didn't want the story to end.
