The chapters were very long , which I don’t like but overall the book wasn’t… if that makes sense to anyone else. Overall all as a black woman it does make me think of my relationships with my non black friends and my comfortability to have race conversations with them and wonder if they don’t see color because it’s not something they have to worry about or fear. Very serious and difficult to read because it can upset you with all events of police brutality and racism.
I had heard @jopiazzaauthor and @cpride on a couple podcasts recently (@marriageandmartinis & @ttfapodcast) and couldn’t wait to read this book. Especially amidst recent events, this was a tough but eye-opening read.
The story is one told from alternating perspectives - two women in an interracial friendship who, until a heartbreaking tragedy, have never really talked about race across decades of their relationship.
We Are Not Like Them addressed complex topics through the lens of an enduring friendship. I enjoyed this book (read it in one day!) and would recommend it to anyone looking for a thoughtful read.
I picked this up on a trip in Portland at the infamous @powellsbooks

An important and powerful read that I wish dug even deeper into the topics and conversations that Riley and Jenny were having.

I would give this book 4.5 ⭐️! I really loved the back in forth between the two main characters. So many real life people are in these situations and I think it is important to explore the topic of race. Enjoyed this book!

We Are Not Like Them has been everywhere since it came out last fall, and I've only heard amazing things about it. I was intrigued to read about such a polarizing topic written by two interracial friends.
Based on reviews, I was expecting a more unbiased look at both sides, and I was a little let down by the way some of the characters were written in that regard. I did think the second half got much better, and the epilogue was short but very effective. But overall, I'm not really sure where I stand on this one other than it didn't live up to the hype for me.
