I applaud these authors for writing a book with this plot, because it gave me a lot to chew on. I read it for a work book club and I look forward to our discussion. Life is muddled, and I appreciated how muddled this story was - nothing is clear cut when it comes to murdering people, making racist comments to your very best friend, or making decisions that feel like turning on your coworkers. I would have liked to get Kevin’s POV a bit more just because so much of the book is Jen saying “I don’t even know what happened!” and from an emotional standpoint, first person POV always wins out, and Kevin was surely the first person. It seemed a little too convenient that Kevin was the second shooter, and had less “blame” (I mean he still killed someone) than the initial cop. White men are the worst and ACAB, as always.

Jen was a really unlikable character. Riley did all the emotional labor and forgiving in this story. The premise of this book was great. After finishing it, I wasn’t really sure how I felt about it… a few other reviews put into words what I was feeling about this book.
This is very surface level, racism 101. Jen starts out as a selfish, self centered, victim mindset character and doesn’t really grow at all from there. She is a typical WMWW, and I have enough of those in my community. Riley seems like she would be an amazing friend and worthy of better people in her life.

Graphic: Death, Gun violence, Hate crime, Racial slurs, Racism, Police brutality, Grief, Murder, Pregnancy, Toxic friendship
Moderate: Infertility, Miscarriage, Blood, Classism
A book every bookclub should read. I’d sum it up as the story of a friendship challenged by Black Lives Matter vs blue lives matter. Eye opening with many points for discussion. A page turner that is timely and relatable.
