There is a lot to unpack with this one, race, class, privilege, and the depth of friendship.  It reminded me of Rebecca, Not Becky; but got the "big darn deal" out of the way really quickly.

Heart breaking, but not in a way that lingers on the heartbreak, rather we move relatively quickly to real life living.

A solid book and a really important read imo. The first half was 5 stars for me, but I felt like it lost momentum in the second half and then ended kind of quickly. Maybe I just wanted to see more of the rebuilding in Riley’s relationship with Jenny.

This had potential to be a five star read but the ending was unsatisfying & rushed, and Riley's romance felt forced and unnecessary. Still an enjoyable book overall and I hope this is a topic that inspires more books and discussions.

It’s eerie reading a book that very closely mirrors real life events (Sonya Massey was shot by a cop this week). Part of me feels frustrated that the police officer married to one of the main characters is “not as guilty” as the other cop, and so he gets away with it, and we’re supposed to be happy with that ending. The other part of me realizes how close to reality that type of ending actually is.

I think this book may be helpful for white people to understand racism and racial prejudices on a better level. Yet, another book about race written where it feels like it benefits (the learning experience of) white people the most. Good book overall, despite these complaints.
