I picked this up on a whim because I saw the announcement of the sequel in the same edition I have and wanted to know if I liked it before I impulsively bought it just because it’s pretty and will match.

This really surprised me! I ended up thoroughly enjoying my time with this. I loved all the characters and all their perspectives. I liked the plot and everything that was going on with it.

I see a lot of people annoyed at the shortness of it but I thought it worked perfectly! I hope the sequel really explores more in the world and the history and the gods. This was so much fun.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. The writing was good and flowed with ease. I personally didn't see the plotline/twists as I was too busy just being absorbed by the story. I liked the variety of perspectives to read as, and enjoyed the God/magic type system - felt fresh from other general magic systems I've read about.

The only downsides I can think of are that the romance and the twist didn’t quite hit for me. They felt a tad predictable and unremarkable. However, it wasn’t badly done, so it’s not distracting.

Overall, the pacing, prose, dialogue, and characters were all excellent! I also really loved the way that things like prostheses, sign language, and PTSD were woven into the world in very grounded, human ways that felt natural and respected while also being completely mundane. Also, I love a good queernormative fantasy!

Looking forward to seeing the magic system and gods expanded upon in the rest of the series.
