what a cute book about the sgv. <3 i love the representation of the southeast asian community in socal and the fantasy and sci fi elements! the execution + writing style left much to be desired, but i’m so representation deprived tbh that i’ll allow it and i hope that this book paves the way for even more southeast asian and queer/trans representation in sci fi! we gotta fr take the sci fi genre back from white men lolz they’ve had it for long enough and for what?

Ultimately I was very bored while reading this book. I kept waiting for something interesting or exciting or new to happen and it never did.

Nothing was surprising about the book either.
I thought there would be more space scenes.

I did not like all the POV switches. There was way too many.

Poor Markus. I wanted more about his character.

I was really impressed by this book. It is an ambitious story with a ton of genre bending. Somehow the author makes all of it make sense in my mind and makes me feel like demons obsessed with the violin  and aliens making donuts can exist in the same universe. I felt that it was very respectful with hard topics and was incredibly inclusive. The prose were beautiful and I think the plot was as strong as the character work. Definitely recommend.

I was swept away by this fascinating intersection of 3 women, each who could have independently owned a novel. Each individual was woven into one epic that never slowed down. A vivid trans music prodigy, a soul-dealing ancient teacher and an elegant queer starship captain are fascinating and comfortably written characters - none defined by only one of their adjectives. As a result I felt more connected to these women than my others I read in sci-fi. I loved watching these characters grow organically and make decisions that felt natural and real to who they had been and were becoming as characters. I will be searching out more by this author.
