The beginning was cool af, the part in Rome DRAGGED, and then the rest was quite fun
Too long. Difficult to follow old French but I’ll pick it back up later

While definitely popular literature, Dumas’ command of subtext and overlapping narratives holds more than meets the eye. The opening secures our knowledge that Dantes is not merely a hateful egomaniac; and his quest for vengeance artfully avoids murder as he recompenses (though probably because of a principle of proportionality, and not Christian mercy, which Dumas leaves out). Furthermore, Dumas’ commentary on money is fascinating. Both Caderousse and Danglars are greedy, yet Dumas never contradicts their fundamental understanding that the world is run by money. The vice of simony, and its correlate implications for reality, are not considered. I only wish that Monte Cristo’s redemption would have been more drawn out. Perhaps it was my choppy reading of the book, but it seems rather sped through at the end of the novel. All in all, well worth a reread.
Moderate: Forced institutionalization, Murder, Abandonment
Minor: Suicide

Wow is there a lot going on in this book. By about 20% in I was confused as to where the book was headed because the first portion could almost stand on it's own as an interesting story. From that point forward an elaborate plot unfolds that nicely ties together by the end. Those with some knowledge of french history during the bonapartist movement will probably take a lot more from the book than I did on that front ...
Otherwise my only complaint is that the narrative is a little more drawn out than it needs to be ... but overall it is a good story.

One of my favourite books of all time; an incredible adventure written brilliantly and the tale of revenge the characters find themselves in suck you in too. Both times I’ve read it I haven’t been able to put it down
