"To Be fair, when the alarm goes off, there's barely any smoke rising out of the oven".
This was so cute. It was the most adorable YA contemporary that I have read in a very long time. Was it perfect? No, of course not, but for a debut novel, I am more than impressed. The writing was witty and the banter was cute. Pepper and Jack are the sweetest two people in literature. I mean, come on... Peeper + Jack... Pepperjack? It's the best.
My biggest issues with the book were some of the plots were really convenient. You kind of have to suspend your disbelief because realistically, there wouldn't be two teenagers running the social media for two burger chains. People go to school for jobs like that. I also didn't understand the motivations for some of the characters, specifically Pepper's mom. It seemed like she was putting this social media contest above Pepper's education and mental health.
Overall, I definitely enjoyed it and will definitely read more from Emma Lord in the future. 3.5 stars!

Sometimes I feel like I give too many 5-star ratings, but honestly, fuck it. I tend to know if I'm going to enjoy a book or not and I read for entertainment so screw it.
There was no hesitation though when I went to rate this book. It was just so darn cute.
We have Pepper and Jack, two high school seniors living in New York with their families. They know each other from school and tend to not like each other that much. Jack thinks Pepper is a goody-two shoes robot and Pepper thinks Jack is just a dumb class clown. Well, they're not that mean to each other, but neither of them really registers on each other's radar.
Pepper's family started Big League Burger over 10 years ago in her hometown of Nashville. Now, it's the 4th largest fast food/diner joint in America. Pepper is naturally very good at being snarky and witty so her mom forces her to help out with BLB's social media accounts. They have a new campaign starting which is introducing a few different grilled cheese sandwiches to the menu. All is fine and dandy until a small, family-owned deli in New York, Girl Cheesing, accuses Big League Burger of ripping off one of their grilled cheese sandwiches. Not only are the ingredients identical, but they even share the same name. Girl Cheesing @'s BLB on Twitter accusing them of theft and Pepper responds, as the BLB social-media handler. This starts an all-out Twitter-war that goes viral. Little does she know, Girl Cheesing is Jack's family's deli! What starts off as innocent call-outs soon becomes bigger than they can handle. Jack and Pepper are getting closer and closer, but aren't sure when to call a truce with the Twitter-war.
Meanwhile, Pepper and Jack are texting on an anonymous texting app and don't know they are talking to each other. Basically, it's like they are falling for each other in every conceivable situation in their lives.
This book was really good. I was immediately intrigued by the characters, the plot, the writing...every thing made for a super fun book.
If I had one criticism it would be that this book was almost too pure, like rated G. I definitely don't need an R-rated YA contemporary romance, but just a little more something would have made me happy. It seemed like the only physical attributes Pepper and Jack noticed about each other were their smiles. They only commented on each other's smiles, nothing else. I just thought it was a little odd and could have used a little more realistic teenage-crush moments.
I highly recommend this book to anyone that is a fan of YA contemporary romance books. There was a lot going on here, but it all worked so well.
Can't wait to read more from Emma Lord in the future.

This book was adorable! The concept was really interesting and I enjoyed seeing Pepper and Jack interact over Twitter, over an anonymous app, and also in real life - it provided a really cool dynamic! I loved the characters and really enjoyed getting to read from both POVs.
