Still an excellent story, but a bit darker than the others. Plus, not as much of the funny
All of the past bad guys (those who survived) team up to take down the sanctuary (the ruling body of sorcerers) and get revenge on Valkyrie and her friends.
There are several plot lines going in this book and others are started for future books, so it felt much longer than it was. I didn’t like the first story line, but it got better as it went.
There’s also a romantic subplot for the first time, but this is still an action book not a romance.
I liked the addition of necromancy and Soloman Wreath is an interesting character. I’m not sure what his motives are, but I like him. I hope he’s developed more in the future.
Skulduggery gets a power up and some cool new abilities, as does Valkyrie.
The only world building is a hotel that magically appears and disappears every twelve hours, the Midnight Hotel. (Oh and there are now zombies. I didn't like the zombie part, but it wasn't too long.)

It's amazing being back in the company of characters I loved so much in my teens again. This being the fourth book in the series I have to say that the third book ended in an amazingly written cliffhanger.
Derek Landy is an amazing YA writer and even though this book isn't a 5 star read it's still one I've truly enjoyed to devour. Greeting old characters as well as new ones as I got to join Valkyrie on another exciting adventure.
And why am I somehow not surprised what she got bit?
