Alaric McCabe is set to marry Rionna McDonald to forge an allegiance strong enough to defeat Duncan Cameron and keep him from gaining the power he covets. On his way to cement this allegiance he and his warriors are stealthily attacked and only Alaric comes alive from it, only he's very badly wounded. His horse drops him at Keely's cottage door.
Keely McDonald was cast from her home and her clan years ago under shame. A warrior badly wounded arrives at her doorstep and Keely refuses to let him die, so she cares for him. Until the day the McCabe clan warriors arrive to rescue Alaric and take her with them because they need a healer. On McCabe land she feels welcome and has found friendship, but she remains afraid they'll cast her aside when her work is done and her growing attraction to Alaric doesn't help.
Alaric and Keely are helpless to ignore they attraction they feel to one another and even though he is set to marry the woman Keely used to call best friend this attraction cannot be denied. They fall in love and Alaric is set to do the right thing for his people, so much rides on his shoulders and his brother has sacrificed so much for their clan Alaric feels he can sacrifice his heart for the cause. Neither of them expected the attacks on McCabe land, that Laid McDonald has not forgotten Keely and that Keely is willing to put her life itself on the line so that Alaric can have the greatness he's destined for to change what seem to be the best laid plans for allegiance.
5 stars seems low in rating, that good was this story. A true love story, like few around these days. There are very few stories able to make me feel anything, specially cry. This was one of them. I cried almost through the whole ending of the book, the only thing that held me together was the knowledge that something good had to come out before the last story, I mean it couldn't have ended in tragedy, it just couldn't. I felt everything, all the emotions poured in the pages, the love, the hate, the anger and the friendship. I fell in love with Alaric, Caelen (who showed another side of himself) and the entire McCabe clan all over again. I hated McDonald fiercely and admired Keely like not many heroines I've read. Keely is what true heroines are made off, soft, yet strong. Maya Banks has another winner in this book, I could not put it down and devoured it in less than 6 hours. I cannot wait for the last installment, something tells me Caelen's story will be as great or even better.

This one was a lot lustier than the last one. So didn’t see their feelings for wanting to be together as much. Still enjoy the characters and will read the third one :)
Wow. Just wow.
Alaric is going to marry Rionna, but he got ambushed on the way to her village. Hurt and bleed to death, he fell in front of Keeley's cottage. Keeley, with her ability to heal wounds, taking care of Alaric and slowly but sure, falling in love with him. And apparently, it's vice versa from Alaraic's side. But what will they do when his time of marriage with Rionna come?
From Highlander series, Alaric's the tender one. There's no time when he got arrogant jerk towards Keeley. He's nothing but gentle and kind, a bit different from Maya Banks's usual Hero.
I know Maya Banks's storyline is getting familiar even though her theme of stories are always different, but I find it enjoyable and easy to catch up with. Her angst are enough to make me hurt all over and don't mention her hot scenes. Phew!
I loved Alaric, and my heart goes with him. Keeley, is just Maya Banks's typical heroine yet I liked her too. It's a little bit surprising that I loved this series so much despite the fact that its language--again, is a confusing. More proof that Maya Banks are one talented lady.
Nailed it!
