Alaric McCabe is on his way to meet his intended - Rionna McDonald - which will seal ties between the two clans. When his party is attacked on the way, and he is injured, he ends up in Keely's hut, where she nurses him back to health. She was cast out of the McDonald clan due to false accusations and somewhat willingly goes back with Alaric and his brother's to the McCabe keep.

The attraction between them is unmistakable and they give into it even though it is destined to be short lived because Alaric is still meant to wed Rionna - or is he?

Overall, this was enjoyable, but not quite as much as the first book in the series.

I couldn’t put this down. A lot of angst, lovers being torn apart (my heart being torn apart), some great female friendships, and clan drama.
The highlighted quotes speak for themselves.
The only thing that could have made this better was an epilogue. Yet, the next book starts where this story ends, so maybe we’ll get some more glimpses of Alaric and Keeley.

I usually love me some Scottish historical romance, but I guess this time I just wasn't in the mood.
adventurous emotional tense medium-paced

Ok, the angst and the sweet heartbreak really got to me. Favorite MB highlander yet.

Alaric McCabe is betrothed to Rionna McDonald, the daughter of the neighboring McDonald clan. When Alaric is on his way to McDonald land, he is attacked and left for dead. Keeley McDonald has been abandoned by her clan, and she works as a healer. When she finds Alaric after he has been beaten, she helps nurse him back to health. Ewan McCabe, Alaric's older brother, brings Keeley back to the keep so that she can help his wife, Mairin, with the birth of her first child. Keeley and Alaric fall in love, but the fat that he is betrothed to another woman looms over their relationship. Full of angst.

emotional fast-paced

Wow I actually cried real tears over this book. Keeley was an amazing character and I related to her so much. She and Alaric are so in love but forbidden from each other. I loved the friends she made and seeing her open up. This was so precious.

It got a little cheesy at points...
A little... Nacho cheesy. (Ignore me)

Great second book of the series. Maya banks is gray at writing strong female heroines that are so fun to read about. I stayed up super late because I could not put this book down its that good!
