This book started off...not good. I had previously read three books by this author and really liked one of them ([b:Never Seduce a Scot|13360101|Never Seduce a Scot (The Montgomerys and Armstrongs, #1)|Maya Banks|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1328116176s/13360101.jpg|18588471] - try to ignore the cheesy title), only half-way liked another ([b:Highlander Most Wanted|13457423|Highlander Most Wanted (The Montgomerys and Armstrongs, #2)|Maya Banks|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1339473081s/13457423.jpg|18986972]), and disliked the third ([b:In Bed with a Highlander|9962040|In Bed with a Highlander (McCabe Trilogy, #1)|Maya Banks|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1348705921s/9962040.jpg|14855973]). So obviously this author is a bit of a mixed bag for me. I almost quit this book within the first couple of chapters when I thought it was steering into insta-love territory, a personal pet peeve of mine. I'm really glad I didn't quit! This ended up being a really good "forbidden" love story. I almost cried at the end. Though this is the second book in this series, I think you can skip the painful first book and just jump to this one - the backstory is filled in well enough.

Short review. Based upon the reviews I kind of skimmed I thought this would be terrible because I too was expecting Rionna to be the heroine.
It's not earth shattering or anything but I've read worse. I liked this one just fine.
3.5 stars if they'd let us do half stars

After starting the McCABE series on audio, I desperately wanted to continue it that way. Sadly my library didn’t have this one in audio and I couldn’t wait any longer.
I am in love with the McCABE men. They are passionately loyal to their clan and their hearts. Alaric is the epitome of duty. A second son that has an opportunity to rule a clan and make the Highlands safer for his family. This is more than he thought he’d ever have, but he longs for the kind of marriage his brother has. One good for his clan, but equally good for his heart. Life is hard in the Highlands and one out of two is better than most get.
Keeley is the perfect mate for Alaric. She is a fighter, but with the softness he longs for. But Keeley isn’t the woman he is promised to. This just made things incredibly complicated.
MAYA BANKS played beautifully with my heart. There is no let down from IN BED WITH A HIGHLANDER. It matches the peril, action, politics and love of its predecessor. But Alaric and Keeley’s story and the obstacles between them give your heart an extra squeeze. And don’t forget the tears. I am addicted to the McCABE men and their world. I had to instantly pick up NEVER LOVE A HIGHLANDER.

This was so amazing. I was so caught up in everything between Alaric and Keeley. I was on the edge of my seat with all the tension, longing, and passion happening and I was pretty much dying for my HEA. So freaking fantastic!
I loved Alaric and Keeley, these two had major chemistry. I loved how challenging they were to one another. Keeley is seriously feisty. I loved how caring and wonderful they were and how their feelings were growing in the midst of this impossible situation since Alaric is supposed to be with another. I really enjoyed how they fought those feelings as they continued to fall for the other. I ate up every detail as the longing and passion grew. It totally gave me butterflies! I couldn't wait to know how it was all going to work out. The heat factor is crazy wow… these two were super freaking ridiculously hot together.
I loved every single detail. I loved learning about Keeley's past and how that played into the story. The excellent cast of characters, the brothers and seeing Mairin and Ewan again. The lay of the land. The dialect. The time period. All of it. It was so fun to read, seriously, I was chuckling so much. The women are fantastic, challenging their men, and being completely exasperating since they don't put up with being told what to do most of the time. The men are alpha and adorable all at once, it's so sweet and cute how they're all tough and brawny but they totally cave to their women. There is a great amount of drama too and I just loved all the different layers involved and side stories happening as well.
The writing was fantastic. So descriptive with an incredible pace. I wanted these two to be together so badly and I could feel that tension and pain in the middle of this complicated situation and the build to get there was awesome. Which led to a pretty amazing conclusion for Alaric and Keeley. There’s a nice bit at the end that leaves you really excited for the next book. Can’t wait!
This was just awesome. Highly entertaining. Drama filled. Lots of emotion and heat as well. I was just enraptured with it all. Fantastic read!

I'm terribly sorry, but I just can't. I think Maya Banks is just not the author for me.
