This was a hard book to read. Lots of characters faded in and out. More confusing and more dense than other Expanse books.

I liked seeing the progression of Phillip, and as always it is fascinating to see some of the philosophy of the writing at work. Feels a bit like an end, and if I'm right this is where the show ends. I feel like the stuff with Miller ended in previous books more abruptly than I would have guessed, and doesn't seem likely to come back? But I'm still curious about some of the things we don't understand yet.
Is humanity really just playing in the bones of this other great race? Is the limit on the gates just a mechanical limit, or is it some other factor "stealing" people? Seems from the description of Marcos's perspective and that other guy from the previous book that it could be benign mechanical limitation, but it could also be indifferent godlike beings. More to come, I suppose, but it would be a shame if this whole series goes by without introducing humanity to any actual living aliens, not just their sad and tragic remains. But maybe that's just me.
