The Elysean Trials

4.08 AVERAGE

Rcvd an advanced reader copy from the author for giving my two cents. Whoa...what an epic ride of trials and tribulations with a side of sarcasm. We meet Sera, 17 almost 18 yr old who yearns for freedom. Her parents died when she was a child and a distant uncle took her in after fosters and orphanages. Today is the day the the Elysean city opens its doors every 4 years and seeks students to take the challenge to become a God. Sera doesn't believe any of the hokey pokey God stuff...they are not immortals and she's vocal about it. When the Elysean releases their robotic birds to find their challengers...one picks Sera as she yells that the God are pretty much fake....so what does she do...she runs. But when an Elysean is at her house to take her to the city...she knows her life is pretty much over. She encounters bullies, intimidating elyseans and a very sexy male whose shadows make him irresistible. Sera finds a target on her back. The challengers learn do 3 tasks that need to be done in the dome...each one harder than the other so they must study the knowledge to prepare themselves. Sera's memories of the orphanage when she had to learn everything and I mean everything about the gods comes back to her...but why now? A laundry lady Edea seems to be her only friend who will listen. Sera must remember nothing is as every as it seems and you can only trust one person....yourself!

I'd say like 3.5 stars. I like the story, it flows well, plot is good, but it's a little amateur (is that the word I want?) . Some small editing related errors.

It reads Young Adult but isn't marketed as such. And does have a couple sex scenes.

It's a series and I will keep reading.

Could not get into it

I need to read the 2nd book! I love the plot! I love the main character Sera as well! I can’t wait to get my hands on a physical copy!

3.5-4 ⭐️’s: Greek mythology meets Hunger Games. Sera wasn’t my favorite main character - I get it you hate the Elyseans and don’t believe in their Gods, it didn’t need to be reiterated every couple of paragraphs. Other than that it was a very entertaining story.

Compelling story, appreciated the Greek mythology and the world building. Fun romance and contemporary fantasy feel. But some annoying things:  1) the FMC was difficult to root for -- unnecessarilly making enemies and taking her bitterness out on everyone else but then crying and seeing herself as purely the victim (which she was also, the bullying and targeting by the other characters seemed extreme and got kind of old). 2)typos and simple editing errors were getting on my nerves -- the farther into the book I got, the more grammar and spelling mistakes I noticed. Also could benefit from a good editor to cut down the length, tie the disjointed pieces together better, and just generally make the story flow a little better 3) why did she never use her magic rock throughout the story until the very end? There were so many places that it would have been useful and would have given her a way to talk to the MMC and her best friend but it was just ignored, and 4) while I loved the Greek twist, it basically felt like I was reading a combination of Hinger Games  and 4th Wing with a little bit of Throne of Glass thrown in. Almost like the author sat down with these stories in mind but went how can I make it a little different and went with Greek God's.
However, I say all of that, but after about the first 100 pages which were super slow, the rest sucked me right in and I couldn't put it down. Will definitely read the next one to see what happens next!

To say it simply, I LOVED this book. This was my first time as an ARC reader and I couldn’t be more happy that this was the book to start out with.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lots and lots

I absolutely loved this book alot! The fantasy. The plot twists. The cliffhanger. ALL OF IT! It kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to learn more, to continue to discover the story and felt as if I was living the trials with how it is written.
