Oh my goodness wow. I am not a big fan of true crime but this book was VERY wholesome even with that in mind. I let my wife pick it and honestly it was so cute.
Sam is seriously the best and the fact that the author loves Phoebe Bridgers and dropped plus sized brands for the main - Phoebe, was relatable.

So funny and cute! A little different then your average romcom and I loved it!
I tend to adore character development driven stories, this one was not the case. The main character, Phoebe, struggles to open herself up to people, and during the whole book, she did not bound with anyone. There are of course, other characters but never bounding. For instance, her childhood friend Alison, whom she has not spoken to for years because of events. They met again, they talked but not bound, true, Phoebe did talk to her about her affairs and struggles, but we don’t know anything about Alison. I don’t know if I am clear, it the story is so focus on Phoebe that we cannot meet any other characters, even the ML, we just know that he loves music, teach in elementary school and as a large family. We don’t know why he falls for the FL.

A story about a cynical, self-protective academic Phoebe (PhD student) who comes home to deal with her dead father’s estate and finish her dissertation. A mysterious next door neighbor, her goofy brother, and a literal black (and white?) cat all make her question the narratives she has constructed about herself while she critically analyzes the literature of true crime non-fiction. The characters felt very realistic and the author clearly did lots of research to make the academic parts very believable and attempt to describe the nuances of true crime research, although some of her references came across a bit flippant. Sam, her neighbor, is able to come across as a full person even in the single POV and I loved the chemistry between them, even if he was flawless as a character. My main critiques are that the references were much more elder millennial appropriate (and sometimes too much, even if more obscure stuff) and I would have like a few more threads to come together at the end but great debut.
