Unlikeable MC. I found her irritating, self absorbed, and i just plain didn't care about her. Couldn't imagine spending another moment of my time with her.
I enjoyed the story and it was a quirky concept. Well-written with witty iconic pop culture references and detailed research into the history/psychology of serial killers. Being a criminal minds fan, this element of the book drew me in. There are a lot of humorous moments that are cryptic and might not stand out for everyone but delighted me. Lenore the cat is the star of the show in the book!
What let this book after a brilliant start and intriguing promise of the hook was the female protagonist I found it hard to click with Phoebe; she was distant, prickly, resentful, and toxic. Even though I was reading her point of view, I felt at arm's length as she told the story. Something both Sam (love interest in the story) and I shared from this reading experience. There are some heavy topics the author threaded into the story premise relating to grief, death, and emotional trauma for Phoebe’s character arc, however, I felt her growth become stagnant in the middle of the book and how she treated other characters at times was awful.
Things do pick up in the last act of the book, but I don’t think it was enough to give me a change of heart about Phoebe. I found the supporting characters incredibly well-written and likable. Phoebe’s brother, Conor, definitely was a favourite throughout the book. I would love to read his story. Sam’s an amazing book boyfriend material and I feel deserved more as he was kind-hearted, considerate, and supportive despite harsh treatment.
Trope to expect:
- Strangers/Friends to lovers
- Close proximity (next door neightbours)
- Insta attraction
- Rom-com
- HEA

Easy 5 star for me. Phoebe is *me*. I had a degree in Criminal Justice though, but all her feelings toward her dad, are feelings I get. It makes me thankful that my dad and I are able to have a relationship now.
Loved it so much, I plan to buy a physical copy! If they ever have a special edition I'm snagging it up!!

"Are the flaws of thr main character(s) a main focus of the book?" This book doesn't even have a focus.
• I am not getting the point of this story. The words are all over the place.
• Super relatable. Both my life and this story lack direction.
• Truly lacking depth. Is this about grief, Phoebe's commitment issues, her family issues? It's everything but the way it all unfolded as shallow as a puddle after a light rain.
• Very disappointed because I was super excited because the cover looks good and Ali Hazelwood gave this 5 stars. Ugh.
• An afterthought. See how I didn't mention serial killers? Because there were references but not really integrated into the story. No allusion of any kind to the serial killing. What is the point of all of these???
• 3 stars is for Sam and Conner and Shani

2.5 serial killer stars ⭐️
Majority of this book was a boring who cares plot. Like I enjoyed the Alison storyline, but after the blazer she just went away? And no real developments happened after that. She could have been cut to make the story less drawn out.
I really enjoyed Sam, I mean how could you not? He is very shy golden retriever.
Phoebe on the other hand….. wowie. That’s an annoying girly. Maybe I don’t know the dissertation stress yet, but she needed therapy.

This book had a lot of cute parts and some parts that I didn’t really like. Our FMC was okay, I didn’t really connect with her and so this made some parts really not enjoyable to read. But it was a sweet book I just wish we had more romance between the two MC. Honestly I thought if Phoebe just went to therapy everything would be so much better.

Interesting concept with poor execution. Frustrating main character. Too many cringe moments. Author tries very hard to be quirky and funny but fails. And too many pop-culture references (not counting the crime stuff). Also a proposal of nightmares.
