2.5 stars, but not worth rounding up. This book felt confused on what it was trying to be - romantic comedy, romance, auto-fiction, a tale about grieving, a story about working through a dissertation…so many things!
“True crime is a perfect example of that,” I said. “At its heart, it’s about what do we know about humanity’s capacity for evil and what should we be afraid of. The answers to those questions can tell us a lot, especially when you look at the intersections of privilege and power, who are telling the stories, who are the subjects of them. I know a lot of people think true crime is a pulp genre, and not worthy of analysis, but the fact that it’s so closely tied to mainstream fixations makes it more worthy. If I can help students to pay attention to those stories and the way they’re presented or received, I’d feel like I’d done my job.”
This book perfectly bridged the gap between my two favorite things: true crime & romance. The FMC, Phoebe, is in Florida preparing to sell her childhood home after her dad's unexpected passing, all while wrapping up her PHD dissertation that is focused in True Crime, when sparks start to fly with her neighbor next door. But can she trust him and allow herself to finally open her heart IN A TIME WITH SERIAL KILLERS????
What I found most fascinating about this book, was the dive into our perception of serial killers as a society & the idea behind like what we know about serial killers is greatly effected by the author/narrator of the story we are consuming.

For a book with serial killer in the title I expected a twist ending or more psych thriller vibe. False! It’s a romance.

I think the main issue people have (& myself had) with this book is the fact that the marketing leans so far into the romance genre and I don’t think that’s at all accurate. It reads more like a lit fic with a side salad of romance to enjoy. It’s almost all thoughts and nothing else; in fact, I would have preferred to read this entire book without the romance subplot, it would have hit so much harder for me.
That being said, I enjoyed it. It’s witty, self deprecating in a really relatable way (don’t lie, it is, we all have ugly parts that we see reflected back at us in characters and it makes us hate them for a reason) and full of pop culture references that were so well used and not thrown in egregiously to try to be funny.
I enjoyed the relationship between the MC and her brother so much more than the romantic interest. They shared this big traumatic event and reflected on two halves of a childhood with patience and grace. Give this one a try, it’s not all bad.

I’ve read worse but I’ve read better. Nothing to reaaalllyyy complain about, except how much I hate the “boohoo I don’t believe I’m worthy of love and don’t want to open myself up to pain so I push everyone away narrative” but that’s a personal issue.
