Seems a bit unfocused and more than a little rushed, but it's an entertaining detour from the main series.

I really enjoyed this one and if you are looking to get into graphic novels, I highly recommend this series and it's original title [b:Fables, Vol. 1: Legends in Exile|21326|Fables, Vol. 1 Legends in Exile|Bill Willingham|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1375392441s/21326.jpg|1138855] because they are so good. To be honest, they are everything I hoped Once Upon A Time would be (and wasn't) but be warned they are for mature audiences. This title was a solid comic but it had some weird pacing for me. It seemed to jump from time to time but I loved the snark and the witty dialogue. I think it was really well done and I enjoyed the art, but I would have liked it to feel less choppy. As well, as another reviewer noted, in every piece of dialogue there was a bolded/highlighted word which made it seem as though it was trying too hard to be dramatic and left me rolling my eyes a lot.

I'm a sucker for origin stories and/or stories about characters that may not get a lot of attention but should.

I liked this story. I think it’s kind of cool that the Snow Queen turned out to be good in the end, though it would’ve been cooler if she’d stayed bad and and Ali Baba had fancied her as the villain she was anyway (we see her as a victim of Jack’s manipulation in Jack of Fables, though, which casts her in a different light than the main arc). I thought Briar Rose would have more action than she did - she’s so cool in the main arc and I think this volume let her down somewhat (although she was the one who defeated Hadeon in the end). It was quite interesting to turn the “true love’s kiss” thing on its head and make the form of love required so vague and unfulfilling. I like that Briar’s single till the end, though it would be nice if she had a great romance along the way (other than Charming, of course)! Maybe that’s to come in the proceeding volumes, I don’t know. The imp was also an amusing touch, even if the annoying sidekick of his ilk is a little clichéd in pop culture (Mushu, Donkey etc.).

The art was beautiful.

I loved the Lamia story at the end. I think it was possibly more interesting than the main story (though the faeries were super cool). I loved the half noir film, half Casablanca vibe of it, and I was pleasantly surprised to see a darker history with Beauty and Beast.

I love me some Lumi and to learn the truth about Beauty? Bruh. I hadn't finished the main Fable series but after reading this I should finish that before. I should've wait for even though I knew some things for I continue with any of the spin-offs since It does contain some spoilers and plot twist.

It's another Fables spinoff! The art (main story by Phil Jimenez and backup by Shawn McManus) is just wonderful. However, both tales feature a substantial change in a female Fable, and in both cases, the change isn't really set up, just presented to us as readers. Willingham's dialogue is crisp as ever, and there's some fascinating new characters, but the abruptness left me a bit cold.
