Beautifully written and evocative--both the book and the movie shine.
What an absolutely beautiful and captivating novel. The balance between dialogue and descriptions in this novel make it a beautiful read.
The story follows the retellings of a famous Geisha as she looks back on her life, childhood and progression through 1920s Japan.
As I’ve said before, the descriptions in this novel of surrounding are some of the best I’ve ever seen. The authors writing is captivating, honest and grounded. The use of water imagery is done so beautifully and is blended in so well with the characters, it is just stunning.
There were also parts of the novel where I was laughing out loud and giggling to myself and there were moments when I was close to tears. The structure of the novel was very reminiscent of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, in which we are being told the geisha’s life through a third party interview.
Honestly, if you’re looking for a different read with an interesting story and truly captivating writing, read this.

Reads as smoothly as honey. Such a quick read for over 400 pages. While I understand it is not 100% historically accurate, it was very entertaining and well written. I’ve always been fascinated by Japanese culture, so this small glimpse into the 20th century geisha world was so much fun! The ending was probably my least favorite part — it just felt very rushed and forced compared to the rest of the book.
This was one of the books I devoured on the subway when I lived in New York. A quick, satisfying read and also very sexy. Reading it made me want to flirt with strangers.
The pace of this book is weird. The beginning is great as an introduction to the culture and characters. I had a hard time with the last 2/3. The middle is just drama. So much unnecessary and uninteresting drama. Then the War, which didn’t get a lot of attention, and then life is basically back to normal? The author covers years in a couple sentences then pages of unnecessary and uninteresting drama.
