I loved this book, but even though it made me cry I couldn't give it five stars because of the end. <Spoiler> As much as I loved this, I thought after everything that happened in Dhaka, Rukhsana forgave her parents too easily. I feel like I needed more time for them to really make up for the fact that they basically abused their daughter. Not to mention all the emotional stress they put her under and all the unfair treatment compared to her brother over the years. . Would deff recommend, though.

This book is a difficult read, but so easy at the same time...its concisely uplifting but represents so well the issues facing the LGBT+ community, and the way that changes for brown people.

While I enjoyed reading this book, it's one of those where I'm not obsessed with it. I found most of the characters realistic since I didn't always completely support their actions but it I didn't actively hate them. I am grateful about the things I'd learn from this book though.

Great book, but for mature teens. If you want to skip the graphic stuff, then just don't read the grandmother's journal entries. I didn't, and understood the story just fine. Other than the content issues (which really add to the gritty plot) it is an emotional book that is desperate yet hopeful. A truly moving (and harrowing) way of portraying being a lesbian within an unsupportive (downright hateful, actually) family.

I was in a dark place when I started this book. It was a beautiful journey, and helped me channel many feelings. It gave me hope and a very important affirmation that the life that you deserve to live the life you want to live. It's worth fighting for. And your story deserves to be heard as much as anyone else's.

The writing felt a little choppy in the beginning but I loved the story!

This book was a little young for me, as the characters are in high school. It is difficult at times to read the choices they are making when a better alternative seems obvious. However, this is a book about teenagers, and teenagers do not always make good decisions. At one point the main character reads a diary including some intense subject matter that I did not feel like the book did enough to address. The abuse detailed in the diary seemed to be glossed over in favour of the main character's personal development. I do not think such subjects should be handled so lightly.
Overall, the story was interesting and I enjoyed learning more about Islamic and Bengali culture.
