Muito bem narrado, muito cativante... voltarei a W. Maxwell. Mais meia estrela, por favor.

Spare and poignant. A moving story. Maxwell's evocation of childhood possibly the best I've read.

This is a very short book, divided into two parts, the first being basically a memoir about a boy's growing up in the wake of his mother's death, and the second an exercise in imaginative empathy as Maxwell recreates the circumstances surrounding a terrible murder that occurred in his community in 1921, when he was thirteen. The book touches on grief, family dynamics, guilt, and friendship, and it manages to touch quite a few emotional buttons in the reader despite not being very long. In other words, I felt all the feels with this one. The writing itself is masterful, with finely crafted sentences and phrasing and vivid descriptive details that bring people and places to life. This novel is not structured as a traditional novel with the classic story arc. It is blend of fact and fiction that meanders between narrative storytelling and personal introspection, and it manages to be both beautiful and powerful. Highly recommended.

Liked snippets of the writing but didn’t really manage to connect with the story. Read it in a fragmented way because I was busy though.

When I finished the last chapter, the book took my breath like a good book should do. Almost everything leading up to the ending was haunting as well.
