The first time I read this book I struggled but second time round, being less fascinated with an ongoing "story line" I was able to enjoy the writing and the detail and depth of each little story within.

First I will say that every adult in Toby’s life clearly failed him when he was young, and for that I feel very sorry for him. I understand writing a memoir that outlines the difficulties you faced in your life, how they made you grow, and then how that shaped you into success.
Except here you only get the first part. He just tells you all the horrible things that happened and all the bad things he did as a trouble maker…. And that’s it. Oh, except he never admits he was ever bad because in his own mind he never intended to be bad.
In the last chapter you learn he does end up being successful. But how did he get there? Dunno. Did his struggles help or hinder his success? Dunno. Does he regret any of the things he did? Dunno.
Also, he talks about some pretty disgusting things involving SA. I understand what he wrote might have been his thoughts at the time, as a teenage boy. But again, he is now a grown adult man writing these things and there was zero accountability and reflection, like wow maybe I was wrong back then. Barf.

A friend of mine gave me this book to read many years ago, and of course, I never got around to it. Now that I've finally read it, I can see why he gave it to me. Thanks Steve. Sorry I didn't read it sooner.
This is a terrific story. Wolff's voice is familiar and weaves a narrative that puts me right next to his younger self. I can completely identify with this boy. It's almost as if I was reading some of my own story through his words. I wonder how many others have shared similar experiences?
This is the first work I've ever read by Tobias Wolff, but I'm definitely interested in reading more from him.
I highly recommend this book to people who enjoy a good coming of age story.

Such a good book. I read it in a single day and felt like a little kid while reading it. I love this book.
