I wanted to love this book so much. I love the author. I love the tropes. Sadly, this one was a miss for me.

Not wanting to spoil their friend group’s final trip to their beloved vacation spot in Maine, Harriet and Wyn decide not to tell everyone that their engagement has been off for months. A series of events forces their proximity, putting them in the happy couple spotlight more than either of them finds comfortable.

I enjoyed the first few chapters and setup, but then it felt like it was endlessly dragging on. Harriet and Wyn’s lack of communication skills infuriated me. Yes, romance needs conflict and miscommunication somewhere, it just got to the point where they started resolving things and then backtracked. I didn’t feel the characters were fleshed out as much as other characters in past books. The side characters brought more to the book on that front.

I’m still looking forward to Emily Henry’s next book, however, I will be going into it trepidatiously. Book Lovers was only okay for me, but I still had high hopes for Happy Place. In part, my reading tastes seem to have changed in general.

Enjoyment - 4
Start - 4.5
Characters - 4
Atmosphere - 3.5
Plot - 3
Ending - 2.5
I don't know what it is about Henry's books, but the final third drag heavily to me. I ended up putting the audiobook on 2x speed, which is rare for me. I had the same issue with Book Lovers where I felt the ending was over explained for what it was.
Style - 3.5

Overall - 3.5

I've such complicated feelings about this book. On the one hand, Emily Henry writes such fun, witty banter and creates groups of friends with distinct personalities. On the other, by halfway through I'm always yelling "just talk to each other! Actually communicate!"

I found Harriet's indecision and people-pleasing thoroughly relatable, if frustrating because she kept doing what she thought others wanted in order to keep the peace, when really that meant she was withdrawing from them and smoothing over some much-needed conversations. I loved that we see characters who love each other deeply, but their love isn't enough to fix their issues and insecurities without everyone individually doing the work to figure their stuff out.

🦞Happy Place by Emily Henry🦞

MY RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple forever… until six months ago when they broke up. And they still haven’t told their friends. Now, they find themselves sharing a bedroom at the Maine cottage their friend group goes to every year, and have to try to convince everyone they’re still together, while trying to avoid how much they wish they were.

I loved this book! I loved the atmosphere and the characters and absolutely loved the writing. I liked the inclusion of the previous timeline so you could see our two main characters falling in love, and felt all the characters were developed, as was the story. This book did make me kind of sad, but I really enjoyed it. I think Book Lovers is still my favourite but this is a close second so far.

Some quotes I loved:
  • “I am in that phase of love where you’re sure no two people have ever felt this way before.”
  • “Loving him is the only essential, and everything else is garnish.”
  • “She smiles. Like when she looks back at it, all she sees is the happiness of that day she spent here with her parents, rather than the pain of what came after. Like even when something beautiful breaks, the making of it still matters.”
