This book told the heart-wrenching story of Shari's life, how awful her mother Ruby was, how her father Kevin had zero spine, and Jodi's master manipulation of many people.
I agree with the author that Ruby was obviously abusive and awful BEFORE Jodi came into the picture, and shouldn't be absolved of blame for her crimes. I'm glad her family is happy with the sentence she got.
I think this case shows the true nature of the justice system and how there really are two systems of justice- one for wealthy people, especially if they're white, and one for the rest of us. If a poor person of color had committed these crimes, they'd get a lot more than a minimum of 4 years!
As someone with a parent who has been diagnosed with NPD, I have to say, I hope her mother chooses to try to heal her emotional damage, though I doubt it. I also hope that Shari heals from all the emotional trauma she's experienced from her mother and others.
Overall, this was an interesting book, and I respect the author for not discussing what happened to her siblings in detail, and keeping this memoir about her experience.

Narrator Rating: 4.0 stars
The narrator did an excellent job of telling her own story.

Shari does a wonderful job approaching this devastating circumstance with nuance and so much grace. I would have loved some more reflection on how the LDS church (and church in general) enables abuse....and how this isn't a one-off situation, but something that occurs frequently. Unfortunately, she is still practicing so there was no real critique of the powers that be but rather summed up with "men make mistakes" and she continues to "trust god". I digress. Still a compelling story!

I hope this author and her siblings live long, happy, peaceful, private lives.

The fact that this book needed to be written at all is devastating, but with having no power over her childhood story I am SO proud of Shari for sharing HER experiences as an adult, and for respecting the privacy of her minor siblings. Being fairly aware of much of what Shari/her family experienced, I read this book in less than a day; for others it may take longer to read because the content is hopefully unfamiliar and too heavy to breeze through. Hopefully in the future, we will have less of a need for tell-alls such as this one, but for now I'm glad that people like Shari are reclaiming their lives and their stories. Fuck child abusers and fuck those who willingly enable them.
