i wasn’t expecting this sequel to be just as good as the first book, however i’m so pleased with the pacing, the chills didn’t fail me at the end, similar to how the first book affected me, and overall it was so delicious i ate it up! excuse my informality, but it was too good for a middle grade book. rick riordan has a talent for making movies in your head and it’s so fascinating to watch it go down, even though you’re actually reading it.

Well this had all the same problems as the first book in the series BUT i feel this one had a slightly more engaging plot. That said the plot did feel very jumpy. The asides to each other in the background were also much less frequent in this book so the narrative style was slightly less annoying. Some more character development done to our leads but the side characters seem to be staying pretty surface level for the most part. I did feel like certain side characters in this were really mainly used as convenient plot devices rather than actual development and they ended up killed off or tossed aside after they were useful. Feel like the last book in this series has a high chance of coming off repetitive and/or flopping but we will see.

I like Sadie and Carter’s sibling relationship- it’s something very different from Percy Jackson, though I don’t love the random weird bits like when Sadie says that Carter “isn’t the worst looking boy with his shirt off” or when Carter remarks about how beautiful Sadie is. I get that they’re the only two POV characters, so it's the only opportunity we’ll get to see them through someone else’s eyes, but it is very weird. I also don’t really get why the romantic storylines were so prominent- I mean, Sadie is 12 and turns 13 in this and is in a love triangle with a 16-year-old and the literal god of death. I think if I had read this when I was 12, I would have been obsessed with this, but as an adult I find it kind of uncomfy.

Also, much like the first one, this book is too long. The middle drags a lot, but there is a weird time dilation effect where only about 4 days pass during the whole book, but it somehow feels like forever.
