LB can do no wrong in my reader eyes. Another stellar story, a great hybrid of horror, noir, and sci-fi.

2.5 stars. Some really fascinating ideas, executed far too sloppily to be effective.

I'm going to let my rating speak for itself because I really liked this story, I like Beukes as an author in general, but I like the way she plays with different formats of writing to share both "IRL" and internet conversations and paint a picture of what is going on. We live in a scary time, people can manipulate voice, photos/image, and use this against you (or others). It's difficult to remain anonymous in the world today. This story touches on many factors of our modern world and the horror of it, which I enjoyed.

My rating 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ best of the collection in my opinion!!

This is the 3rd book in the short story Disorder Collection and my fave by far.

This is terrifying because the internet is just that scary and easy to get hold of peoples details. It goes into sex dolls and the sex industry which was interesting and scary. But the message in this was one of the now and the future. Our details are not always safe even if you’re careful… which scares the hell out of me!!

I actually put this one off cause I am a bit of a prude but I needn’t have been concerned. It wasn’t graphic sex scenes … phew!!

A social commentary on female objectification

Plot: We are navigating the world where women are being replaced with headless lab grown bodies for sex work through several short stories, but mostly following one sex worker whose recordings were used to voice the dolls. This story is based on interviews with sex workers from Cape Town.

Likes: I like how through several shorter stories we are putting together the picture of the dangers for women in this particular distopia. I also likes the modern pop culture references mentioned thought the stories.

Dislikes: None.

Audience: Those interested in connecting to women involved in sex work and a commentary on a society that is fostering the market needs for these services by not addressing core issues.

Rating: I rate this with 5/5 stars, as the story was dinamic and hitting some key societal issues in a seemingly light read.
